Agile’s influence on project, programme and change management continues to rise at pace. In modern times, Programme managers need a disciplined but flexible agile approach to the management of transformational organizational change, allowing for iterative and incremental delivery of outputs and benefits.

While there are proven programme management frameworks like Managing Successful Programmes (MSP) and PMI's Program Management Professional (PgMP), these don't provide all the support needed for agile way of working. While Agile Programme Management (AgilePgM) focuses heavily on:

  • Empowered decision-making throughout the programme organisation
  • Iterative approach to defining a programme
  • Incremental delivery during definition of the Blueprint
  • Iterative and incremental approach to Benefits Realisation

Agile Programme Management (AgilePgM) recognises that change is inevitable, hence it is “traditional” programme management with a strong emphasis on:

  • Building in stakeholder feedback based on iterations to create emergent business solutions
  • Incremental delivery of capability and benefits – as early as possible
  • Recognition of the need to evolve everything: plans, products, outcomes, etc.
  • Evolving business cases
  • A culture of empowerment

AgilePgM provides a comprehensive guide on adopting agile programme management while not discounting the use of more traditional approaches like Managing Successful Programmes (MSP) and PMI's Program Management Professional (PgMP).

In the ideal world one of these should suffice any organisation's needs, however reality is much different from idealism. Depending on organisational maturity in Agile, adopting a combination of Agile Programme Management (AgilePgM) and Agile Project Management (AgilePM®) should help organisations with improved revenue and speed to market, developing the right product/ solution (through iterative development and incremental delivery) and increased collaboration and customer satisfaction.
